You put my conflicting feelings about the new housewife trend into words perfectly! I would love to be a stay-at-home mom one day, at least for a period of time, and I do see it as “aspirational” or simply a “luxury” nowadays. But I also think that being a stay-at-home mom today is or at least should be substantially different than in the 50s: first of all, it is a choice and if you decide to go back to work, no one should be stopping you. Feminism gave us this choice – it cannot be blamed for the fact that the workforce is toxic and working mothers are still at a major disadvantage. If anything, we need more feminist activism to correct situations where women still face unfair conditions (i.e. maternal leave).
